Imperial higher requirement: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall (min 6.5 in all elements, single sitting, single-skill retakes not accepted); TOEFL iBT 100 overall (min 22 in all elements) for tests taken before 21 January 2026, or 5.0 (min 5.0 in all elements) on the new 1-6 scale for tests from that date; PTE Academic 69 (min 62 in all elements); Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 185 (min 176 in all elements); Duolingo 125 (no integrated subscore below 115); also accepted: LanguageCert Academic SELT 75 (min 70 in any element), Oxford Test of English Advanced 155 (min 145 in all components). Scores valid only if taken within 2 years of course start. Exemptions listed on the English language exemption page (transnational joint degrees with exempted countries do not count).
How grades are compared
China: Imperial does not accept the Chinese National College Entrance Exam (gaokao) for entry to any of its degrees; applicants may be considered via an accepted foundation programme or an accepted qualification at an external provider (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/international-students/information-by-region/east-asia/). Department minimums for accepted foundations: UCL UPCSE 80% overall, 80% Mathematics and Physics; Warwick IFP Science and Engineering (Engineering pathway) 80% overall, 80% in Mathematics and Physics (course page).
Other requirements
ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) required, modules Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics; 2027-entry windows 12-16 October 2026 or 4-8 January 2027 (in China, Hong Kong and Macau: 12-13 October 2026 or 6 January 2027); window 2 booking 26 October to 21 December 2026. Applicants likely to meet requirements, with a personal statement showing clear interest and a good ESAT performance, may be invited to a 25-30 minute online interview with academic staff (problem solving and motivation). Decisions can take until March. A-level minimum entry standard A*A*A or A*AAA (A* Mathematics, A* Physics with three A-levels or at least A with four, A in third/fourth subject); typical offer A*A*A (three A-levels) or A*AAA (four A-levels). General Studies and Critical Thinking not accepted; science practical endorsement pass required. IB minimum 40 points with 7 in HL Mathematics and 7 in HL Physics; typical IB offer 41. AP minimum 5,5,5,5,5 including Calculus BC, Physics C (Mechanics) and Physics C (E&M) and two further relevant subjects, or 5,5,5 including Calculus BC and Physics C plus an acceptable school leaving qualification and SAT 1480 or ACT 33. Gaokao not accepted. UCAS code H604 (institution I50); UCAS personal statement and reference considered; ATAS not required. 4-year MEng (common first year with Electronic and Information Engineering, BEng/MEng choice at end of year 2).
