Entry requirements

Accepted English tests

One of: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Indicator and IELTS Online not accepted); TOEFL iBT 80/120 for tests taken before 21 January 2026, or 4.5/6 overall for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 (TOEFL iBT Home Edition and TOEFL Best Scores not accepted); SAT EBRW 590; ACT ELA 23; GCSE/IGCSE/GCE OL English grade C or 4; GCE AL/AS English E; IB English 4. Duolingo results may be submitted for reference only and do not meet the requirement. IELTS/TOEFL valid 2 years and must be valid on the application submission date.

How grades are compared

China: JEE for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Students (港澳台侨高考) with an average of 80% in all subjects. Mainland students on a non-Gaokao curriculum use the minimum requirement of the country their qualification belongs to (e.g. GCE AL, IB). Current Gaokao candidates must apply via the national enrolment system, not this scheme (https://admission.cuhk.edu.hk/application/overseas-other-qualifications-non-local-international-team/requirements/)

Other requirements

Application via the International Students Admissions Scheme (non-local applicants needing a student visa/entry permit). General minimum: GCE AL / International AL 3 AL passes or 2 AL + 2 AS passes (no grades stated), or IB Diploma 30/45, or e.g. US high school diploma + SAT 1190 or ACT 24 + grade 3 in 2 AP tests. IB subject preferences are stated to be NOT requirements (reference only). One personal statement (max 4000 characters) required, academic referee recommendation via online system (up to three referees), CV optional. Interviews only for shortlisted candidates (not all programmes). Admission with Advanced Standing possible for qualifying GCE AL / IB holders (up to 24 units reduced). IB route: grade 4 in IB Chinese Language also listed as general requirement (IB Diploma holders may be exempted at Faculty Dean's discretion). University-wide (not programme) admitted range 2025 entry (25th-75th percentile): IB 37-43, GCE AL 144-168 UCAS points for 3 AL subjects. Gaokao policy: current Gaokao candidates cannot use this scheme and are admitted only through the national joint admission (全国普通高校统一招生, early batch, engineering category 工科类, exam-based, no direct application, no interview), 2026 rules: score at or above the undergraduate-batch/special-type control line, English at least 120/150 (130 for scholarship), bonus points not counted.
