Imperial higher requirement: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall (min 6.5 in all elements, single sitting, single-skill retakes not accepted); TOEFL iBT 100 overall (min 22 in all elements) for tests taken before 21 January 2026, or 5.0 (min 5.0 in all elements) on the new 1-6 scale for tests from that date; PTE Academic 69 (min 62 in all elements); Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 185 (min 176 in all elements); Duolingo 125 (no integrated subscore below 115); also accepted: LanguageCert Academic SELT 75 (min 70 in any element), Oxford Test of English Advanced 155 (min 145 in all components). Scores valid only if taken within 2 years of course start. Exemptions listed on the English language exemption page (transnational joint degrees with exempted countries do not count).
How grades are compared
China: Imperial does not accept the Chinese National College Entrance Exam (gaokao) for entry to any of its degrees; applicants may be considered via an accepted foundation programme or an accepted qualification at an external provider (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/international-students/information-by-region/east-asia/). Department of Life Sciences minimums for UCL UPCSE (the only foundation listed for this course): 80% overall, 80% Biology, 80% Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics (course page).
Other requirements
ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) required, modules Mathematics 1, Chemistry and Biology; 2027-entry windows 12-16 October 2026 or 4-8 January 2027 (in China, Hong Kong and Macau: 12-13 October 2026 or 6 January 2027); window 2 booking 26 October to 21 December 2026. The department generally does not hold interviews. A-level minimum entry standard and typical offer AAA (A in Biology, A in Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, A in a third subject). General Studies and Critical Thinking not accepted; science practical endorsement pass required. IB minimum 38 points with 6 in HL Biology and 6 in HL Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics; typical IB offer 39. AP minimum 5,5,5,4,4 including 5 in Biology and 5 in one of Chemistry, Calculus (AB or BC) or Physics, or 5,5,4 with the same plus an acceptable school leaving qualification and SAT 1460 or ACT 31. Gaokao not accepted. UCAS code C100 (institution I50); apply for either the BSc or the MSci, not both (same entry grades). UCAS personal statement required; ATAS not required. 3-year course (year in industry/research and research abroad variants exist). Applications to places 9:1 (2025).
