Accepted English tests
Required (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test) for applicants whose native language is not English and whose bachelor's degree is not from an institution where English is the sole language of instruction; exempt only with a bachelor's degree from an English-only institution with at least 3 years of full-time enrolment (an English major does not qualify). Tests must be taken on or after January 1, 2025 for 2027-2028 entry. Preferred (not minimum) scores: TOEFL iBT 104 with sections of at least 26 (tests before January 21, 2026) or 5.0 with sections of at least 5.0 (new scale); IELTS Academic 7.5 with each section at least 7.5; Duolingo 140. All non-native English speakers also record a 120-second video response.
Other requirements
Statement of purpose (1000 words) and a short essay response (500 words); résumé or CV; three letters of recommendation; transcripts from each post-secondary institution (unofficial at application, official with translations if admitted; admitted students verify via WES, ECE or SpanTran, self-translation not accepted). Fee $85, fee waivers with documentation of need. GRE optional, taken on or after January 1, 2022 if submitted. Ed.M. applicants may be invited to a virtual interview in January or February on a case-by-case basis. Decisions early March 2027, enrolment response by April 15, 2027. One-year programme: Foundations courses online June-July 2027, on-campus instruction from August 2, 2027. No minimum GPA or China-specific rule published.
