Accepted English tests
An English proficiency exam is strongly recommended (not required) for non-native English speakers who have been using English for fewer than five years or do not speak English at home or in school. Accepted: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, Cambridge English C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Published minimum / recommended scores: TOEFL iBT taken before 2026-01-21 90 / 100; TOEFL on the new band scale taken after 2026-01-21 5 / 5.5; IELTS 7 / 7.5; PTE Academic 65 / 70; Cambridge 185 / 190; Duolingo 120 / 125. Scores are self-reported in the application and verified on enrolment. MIT recommends (does not require) an English test; recommended minimums: TOEFL 90; IELTS 7; PTE 65; DUOLINGO 120; CAE 185.
Other requirements
Admission is to MIT as a whole (general admission), not to a major: the application only asks for a "course of interest", which has no impact on the decision, and students select their major at the end of the first year. International and domestic applicants apply the same way, with the same deadlines. Required: MIT first-year application with four essays (about 100-200 words each), four short responses (40-50 words each) and an activities section, two teacher recommendations, Secondary School Report with transcript (three years of grades plus any external exam results such as IB or A Levels), February Updates & Notes form with midyear grades, application fee USD 75 (waiver available). SAT or ACT required: paper or digital SAT accepted, ACT writing/science and SAT essay not required, highest section scores considered, tests must be taken before November 30 for Early Action or December 31 for Regular Action, scores are self-reported. Interview with an Educational Counselor offered where available; if none is available it is waived without disadvantage. MIT has no required high school classes for domestic or international applicants. Optional creative portfolios via SlideRoom (Research Supplement, Music & Theater Arts, Visual Art & Architecture, Maker), USD 10 each, same deadline as the application. AP, IB, A-level and similar exam results are self-reported but not required. No minimum grades, no China-specific requirements and no gaokao policy published. Financial aid application deadlines: 2026-11-30 (EA), 2027-02-15 (RA). No portfolio is required for admission or for the major; applicants may submit the optional Visual Art & Architecture portfolio (up to 10 images with title, medium, date and description of each work). Major (catalog 2026-27) in the School of Architecture and Planning.
