Required for gaokao applicants; not required for applicants with international A-levels. Minimum scores (NUS English Language Test Scores, updated September 2026): C1 Advanced 180; IELTS Academic 6.5 in Overall, Reading and Writing; PTE Academic 62 in Overall, Reading and Writing; TOEFL iBT 4.5 in Overall, Reading and Writing (new scale; tests taken before 21 January 2026 'will be assessed accordingly'); TOEFL Essentials 10. IELTS Indicator and One Skill Retake not accepted. Scores valid 2 years before the start of the academic year. Entered as the expected level, not a hard minimum, because it does not apply to A-level applicants.
How grades are compared
Gaokao: "a good pass in Gaokao" (no score published) (https://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/admissions/international-qualifications-for-foreigners/international-qualifications/gaokao-or-prc-national-college-entrance-examination). International A-level: "a good pass in at least four 'Advanced' Level subjects" (no grades published) (https://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/admissions/international-qualifications-for-foreigners/international-qualifications/international-a-level).
Other requirements
Prerequisite list ('Engineering', the common admission for College of Design and Engineering programmes including Mechanical Engineering): 'Year 12 or higher level pass in Mathematics'; selection test/interview: No. Admission is to Engineering; Mechanical Engineering is chosen within it, so check the CDE page for how the major is assigned. Applies to foreign applicants with international qualifications (12 years of general education by July of the application year). Gaokao route: completed gaokao results, or Senior Middle 2 Semester 2 results with a good pass in gaokao expected; students who sit the gaokao in the application year must upload results within 3 days of release (2026 page: by 29 June, 12 noon SGT); Senior Middle 3 students not sitting the gaokao apply under 'Other High School Qualifications' with standardised test scores and latest school results; applicants with at least 3 AST subjects (incl. English and Mathematics) may submit them. International A-level route: standardised tests (AP, ACT with Writing, SAT) not required with completed A-levels, required when applying with AS-level results; assessment focuses on content-based subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Accounting and Business; grades from up to two sittings and two boards within 12 months. All applicants list up to four achievements/activities and answer short response questions (NUS Computing FAQ).
